Appreciation and a day of honor and remembrance…

Last Friday the 6th Annual Latino Comp Golf Tournament was held on a perfect day at Angeles National Golf Club. The weather was clear blue skies, pushing in the high 80’s with a slight breeze which made for an ideal setting for this fantastic event. For some of you who’ve golfed this pristine course you would know that while the 18 holes each have their individual charm, they sure are challenging and fun to play. This course is a Par 72 Championship Jack Nicklaus Design, the only one in LA County. A definite jump up from our former venues, Brookside and Arcadia respectively.

I wanted to take a moment and say that I’m proud and thankful for the progression we’ve been making as a group of professionals in our arena. The birth of Latino Comp along with the events that have ensued are only a success because of all of you, the supporters, advocates, volunteers, sponsors and overall good hard working people who all have a common goal, to succeed. I’m proud and honored to be alongside many of you. Thank you to all our Sponsors, sincerely from the bottom of my heart!

Since we are on the topic of appreciation, I’d like to write a few words that honor those who have given their lives to protect our freedom during all wars. It is very telling of men and women alike who are willing to give their lives to defend the sanctity of our nation, its beliefs and its people. Selfless Heroes who deserve all our respect, love and admiration as we view Memorial Day this coming Monday.

A brief look on the history of Memorial Day dates to 1868 well before the end of the Civil War. Union General John A. Logan, the commander of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), emphasized honor and dignity for those that had lost their lives during the war. In all a staggering 620,000 soldiers died while the country was divided. First dubbed Decoration Day, President James Garfield delivered an address on the “immortal” virtue of the war dead and to decorate the graves of the soldiers buried with flags and flowers. So begun this respectful homage to the fallen.

As we celebrate with friends, family, and community during Memorial Day weekend, I’d like to encourage all of us to remember that Memorial Day is dedicated to those Americans who gave their lives while serving in our nation’s military to preserve our freedoms, our way of life, and our nation.

Let’s never forget what this day means, pass our wisdom to our children and grandchildren and never stop honoring those fallen angels we call soldiers; because without them our nation would never be preserved, our freedom wouldn’t be intact and our lives wouldn’t be protected. Sincerely grateful for your service. – Rest in Peace

A few historical quotes that hit my heart.

“The things we do outlast our mortality. The things we do are like monuments that people build to honor heroes after they’ve died. They’re like the pyramids that the Egyptians built to honor the pharaohs. Only instead of being made of stone, they’re made out of the memories people have of you.”

― R.J. Palacio

In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.

― Martin Luther King, Jr.

“True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever the cost.”

― Arthur Ashe
