Returning to work after a break due to an injury and illness can be a bit overwhelming. Some people might feel extremely nervous, while others might feel terrified. If you plan to return to work after a workplace injury and accident and feel overwhelmed, then read on. Here we have mentioned what to do on your first day when you return to work. It will help you to feel more confident.
- Plan Your Day
The first thing you need to do is to plan your day. You can re-look at what you were doing before you had to take the leave and maybe pick up from there. If someone was filling in for you at work, you can have a chat with them and plan what’s next.
- Dress Well
It is also essential to dress well on your first day back. If you take the time to dress the way you did before the break, it will make you feel good. Also, dressing well will make you go into work mode faster. It might also add some positive energy.
- Meet Your Boss/Colleagues
After you have re-joined the office, you need to have a one-on-one with your boss or colleagues (a senior colleague who usually assigns work and the colleagues you work with). Tell them how enthusiastic you are about returning to work and discuss any work modifications you need to do your job properly.
- Act Normal
It is also strongly advised that you act normally at work. Don’t expect people to sympathize with you too much, and don’t draw too much attention. Just do your job well and head home. Don’t think about the time off or what others might think of you. You just stay focused on giving your best to the job.
- Don’t Seek Attention
Some people have the habit of seeking attention and telling their stories unnecessarily. Don’t be one of those people. Stop seeking attention and just do your work. If you want to share your story, do it with people interested in your break time. Don’t push people to listen to it when they don’t want to.
- Listen to Music
If you feel anxious about the job or return to work, you can listen to some calming music on your way to work and even while doing work (if your work and workplace permit it). Avoid listening to the music too loud or avoid music that makes you jumpy. Some relaxing meditation music might help.
- Stay Calm
No matter how anxious you feel from the inside, you need to present yourself as a calm person. Make sure that you appear in control of your emotions. Also, try not to do many things simultaneously as it might not work. Take one task at a time and keep going until you are working seamlessly.
- Talk to an Expert
It is also good to talk to an expert like your vocational rehabilitation counselor and discuss your return to work experience in detail. They might give you some useful tips to make the overall experience less overwhelming and more pleasing for you.
